Nottingham Junior Open 2009

Nottingham Junior Open 2010

Congratulations from everyone at NSRC to junior member Oliver Holland on his success at the British Junior OpenOllie Holland

The most prestigious and longest-established junior open event on the squash world calendar came to a dramatic close today with young Nottingham squash star Oliver Holland taking second place in the under 15 category.

14 year old Oliver Holland, who retains his British number one status, missed out on the title (3 – 1) to Mahesh Mangonkar from India. Holland, who has already decided that he wants to turn professional in the future, trains at the Nottingham Squash Rackets Club – just a stones throw away from his family home in the city.

Holland, who is the first boys finalist in three years, is coached by world class squash player Richard O’Connor who also resides in Nottingham.

More than 450 young squash players from around the world descended on Sheffield to take part in the Technifibre British Junior Open which took place between 2-6th January. There are four categories for both boys and girls – Under 13/15/17/19.

Holland, who is in year ten at Nottingham High School, comments: “I’ve been working towards this tournament for the last year, and I am really proud of the fact that I made it to the finals. I was aiming to win the competition, but my opponent was a fantastic player and deserved the title. In the future I want to be a professional squash player and my dream is to represent England at a senior level.”

Nick Rider, chief executive of England Squash, the sport’s governing body, said: “The British Junior Open is a fantastic event to showcase the future of Squash – the talent on show this year has been phenomenal.

“Squash is a fast paced and exciting sport for all and this event is a great way of communicating that. There are hundreds of players from around the world and some of these could well become household names in years to come.

“Squash is one of the most popular sports in England with more than 500,000 adults playing each month. It is on the shortlist to become an Olympic discipline for the 2016 Games.”

Pete Gooding, East Midlands Area Manager for England Squash added: “We are incredibly proud of
Oliver’s achievement in this competition. His hardwork and determination has really paid off – he has a very bright future ahead of him.”

Nottingham Squash Club has a thriving junior section with over 100 juniors regularly playing and participating in coaching sessions. We run several junior coaching sessions every week and each session is taken by a fully licensed and qualified coach.

Our juniors are encouraged to bring friends along to sessions, initially as a guest with no membership requirement. Session times are listed in the table below and cost as little as £2 for members and £3 for non-members. Pre-booking is not required for most of the sessions. For further information about our junior activities, contact the Junior Coordinator at the Club.

This exciting game fits the needs of younger children and is played using specialised equipment designed to help children achieve maximum success.
